Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari Eco Cruise

4.5 (1,275 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari runs this 4.5-hour eco cruise on the Dolphin Explorer, a 65-foot catamaran moored in the Eastern Viaduct. With 1,251 reviews and a 4.5 rating it is the most-reviewed cruise on this site, and one of two whale and dolphin trips we cover.

The boat leaves from the Eastern Viaduct in the city centre and heads out past North Head, Devonport and Rangitoto Island before the search begins in the open Gulf. Orca and bottlenose dolphins sometimes appear close to the city, so the lookout starts early.

Out in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park the crew scan for Bryde's whales, common dolphins and seabirds, and the skipper provides commentary on what you are seeing. Reviewers describe marine researchers on board sharing tips on reading the water, and sightings that have included pods of dolphins, fur seals, little blue penguins and, on luckier days, a Bryde's whale. One dollar from every ticket goes to the Hauraki Gulf Guardians fund.

It suits wildlife lovers and families willing to spend most of a day at sea. Children under 5 can come if closely supervised, but the trip is not suitable for heavily pregnant women, and stairs and narrow doorways mean the vessel is not wheelchair accessible.

Dress warmly and bring a showerproof jacket, sun hat, sunscreen, binoculars and a camera. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before you board. Snacks, hot food, beer and wine are sold on board. Prices start from $124 per person, and if you see no marine mammals you can come again free.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.5/5 by 1,275 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

It helped that we had a clear, dry, day and calm water. Our guides gave us good insight on how to observe signs of marine life. We saw little blue penguins, pods of 100 or more dolphins, a fur seal, plus one of the extremely rare Bryde's whales. The crew are not just in this business to line their own pockets, they are marine scientists, dedicated to the conservation and protection of marine life around North Island, so very happy that our money helps to fund these worthwhile projects.

The activity was an amazing experience too much dolphins action along the day and towards near end point of the tour, my partner and myself spotted the whale splashing in the great distance and the cruise crew went great beyond to make sure everyone on the cruise could see the whale splashing and not be disappointed.

My partner and I had such a great time on the experience! The crew were super friendly, informative and so knowledgeable! They gave amazing facts and presentations and when I felt seasick, I was given a ginger cube and bag - which I really appreciated. It was amazing being in the gulf, with the sun shining on the beautiful water! we got to see a lot of dolphins, which was so magical! I will never forget it. We didn’t see a whale but it doesn’t take anything away from it! It was a lovely time and glad we did it!

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I see whales?

It is never guaranteed. Bryde's whales live in the Hauraki Gulf year-round and common dolphins are seen in every season, but wild animals keep their own schedule. If no marine mammals are seen at all, you can take the cruise again for free.

How does the free repeat trip work?

If your cruise sees no marine mammals, the operator invites you back on another trip at no charge. Ask the crew on board how to book your repeat date.

Will I get seasick?

The trip goes out into the open Gulf, which can be choppier than the harbour. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding, as the operator advises, and stay on deck in the fresh air.

Is food available on board?

Food is not included, but a small range of snacks, hot food and drinks, including beer and wine, is sold on board.

Can young children come?

Yes. Children under 5 are allowed if a parent or guardian supervises them closely. Bear in mind the trip is 4.5 hours long.
