Auckland Sunset Harbour Cruise

About This Experience

The Red Boats run this sunset cruise out of Z Pier in Westhaven Marina, St Marys Bay, just west of the Harbour Bridge approach and a short taxi ride from the city centre. It is not the downtown ferry terminal, so tell your driver Z Pier. With 221 reviews and a 4.3 rating, it is the most-reviewed of the Red Boats cruises on this site, and it starts from $27 per person.

The crew meet everyone at the Z Pier gate, and a ten-minute safety briefing comes first. The boat then spends about 40 minutes crossing the Waitematā Harbour with the skipper's commentary on Auckland's history and maritime heritage, followed by about 35 minutes passing Rangitoto Island. The timing is built around the light: the Harbour Bridge leg, about 20 minutes, is the sunset photo stop, and the last quarter of an hour drifts back across the harbour as the city lights come on.

There is indoor seating and open decks outside, and a licensed bar sells local wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks and light snacks. Nothing to eat or drink is included in the ticket. The Red Boats do not allow you to bring your own food or alcohol, and anyone who looks under 25 needs photo ID to buy a drink at the bar.

It suits couples, friends and photographers who want the harbour at its prettiest hour for a modest price. If you want food and a drink included after dark, the Night Lights cruise with canapés costs more, and the buffet dinner cruise adds a full meal. Cloud can hide the sunset itself, and recent guests who had grey skies still rated the commentary and crew highly.

Bring a warm jacket even in summer, because the decks get cold once the sun drops. Sunset in Auckland shifts from about 5:10pm in June to about 8:40pm around New Year, so the departure time moves with the season: check the time on your booking. Pay-and-display parking at Z Pier costs about NZ$4 an hour, so arrive early if you are driving.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.4/5 by 247 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

Sadly the weather took a turn for the worse and the sunset was disappointing, but clearly that was never the fault or responsibility of the crew! Our crew provided an excellent commentary throughout and expertly guided us through the choppy waters. We turned for home early due to weather but continued sailing closer to port providing extra information and photo opportunities. Always knew the sunset might not be great, but couldn’t fault the commentary, clear instructions and general enthusiasm of the all female crew. Thank you!

This was the best tour we’ve been on very entertaining and the ladies made sure that we were well taken care of, would highly recommend to anybody coming to Auckland.

We had a great time with our two (wo)man crew. The weather fell out of favor to really see the sunset, but the captain/tour guide made the trip interesting, enjoyable, and light hearted (despite the storm brewing in the distance). We felt very safe, comfortable to ask questions, and were extremely grateful to have been shown around by a multi-generational maori family-owned business. Will recommend red boat to whomever we know who is headed to Auckland. Thanks for the memories!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is food or a drink included on the sunset cruise?

No. The ticket covers the cruise and commentary only. A licensed bar sells wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks and light snacks, and The Red Boats do not allow you to bring your own food or alcohol.

What time does the sunset cruise leave?

It is timed around sunset, which in Auckland ranges from about 5:10pm in midwinter to about 8:40pm around New Year. The exact departure is shown when you pick a date, so check your booking and plan to reach Z Pier early.

What happens if it is cloudy?

The cruise still runs in most conditions, but cloud can hide the sunset itself. Recent guests on grey evenings still praised the commentary, and in rough weather the crew may turn back early and keep sightseeing in the calmer inner harbour.

How is this different from the Night Lights cruise?

The sunset cruise has live commentary and a longer loop past Rangitoto, but no food or drink included. The Night Lights cruise sails later, includes a welcome drink and canapés and plays background music, but the listing states it has no live commentary.

Where do I board?

At the Z Pier gate in Westhaven Marina, St Marys Bay. It is a few minutes by taxi from the city centre and separate from the downtown ferry terminal on Quay Street.
