Auckland Harbour Sightseeing Cruise with Live Commentary

4.4 (156 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is The Red Boats' classic sightseeing loop, and it has a 4.4 rating from 145 reviews. It leaves from Z Pier in Westhaven Marina, St Marys Bay, west of the Harbour Bridge approach, and starts from $22 per person, the lowest price on this site for a cruise with a solid review record.

After a five-minute safety briefing at the pier, the boat spends about 20 minutes on the inner harbour with a photo stop, then about 30 minutes out past Rangitoto Island and another 30 minutes around the Harbour Bridge before heading back to Z Pier. On the way you see the city skyline, Devonport, the marinas and the working port, while the skipper talks through Auckland's history, its Māori heritage and how it came to be called the City of Sails.

You can sit inside the cabin behind large windows or stand out on the open decks. A licensed café and bar sells coffee, soft drinks, wine, beer, spirits and light snacks, and you are welcome to bring your own food. Recent reviewers mention a classic wooden boat and commentary with plenty of humour.

It suits first-time visitors, families and cruise-ship passengers who want a proper look at the harbour in daylight without paying for food. The newer $18 Harbour Highlights cruise from the same operator is half an hour shorter, has only two reviews so far and publishes no leg-by-leg itinerary, so this 90-minute loop is the one to pick if you want the longer time out by Rangitoto and the bridge.

Bring a warm layer, since the decks are breezy even on sunny days. Pay-and-display parking at Z Pier costs about NZ$4 an hour. If you take a taxi or Uber, ask for Z Pier drop-off, not the downtown ferry terminal.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.4/5 by 156 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

Beautiful wooden tour boat built in the 1940s - all “girl” crew were fantastic with excellent commentary throughout the 90 minutes. We were especially lucky to see a bungee jumper dive from the Auckland Harbour Bridge. We highly recommend this tour of the Auckland Harbour as value for money and very entertaining.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this cruise and the $18 Harbour Highlights cruise?

This one lasts 90 minutes, leaves from Z Pier and has a published itinerary with about 30 minutes past Rangitoto and 30 minutes at the Harbour Bridge. The Highlights cruise lasts one hour, leaves from 31 Westhaven Drive and has only two reviews so far. Both have live commentary and a café and bar where food and drinks are extra.

Is food included?

No. Coffee, soft drinks, alcohol and light snacks are sold at the licensed onboard café and bar, and you can bring your own food. If you want a meal included, look at the Red Boats lunch cruise or the wine and cheese cruise.

Does the boat go to Rangitoto or Devonport?

It passes both but does not stop. The Rangitoto leg is a sightseeing pass of about 30 minutes; if you want to walk on the island, book the Fullers return ferry to Rangitoto instead.

Where does the cruise depart from?

From Z Pier in Westhaven Marina, St Marys Bay, a few minutes by taxi from the city centre. It is not the downtown ferry terminal on Quay Street, so ask your driver for Z Pier.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. It is a short daytime cruise with indoor seating and commentary pitched at general audiences. It is not suitable for wheelchair users.
