How Booking Works
Four steps from this page to the deck.
Pick the Cruise You Want
Nearly every cruise here leaves from the city waterfront, between Westhaven Marina and the Viaduct. What differs is the boat, the length, whether food is included and how far out it goes. The comparison below lays that out.
Book With Free Cancellation
Choose a date and a departure time in the calendar. Every cruise on this site can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.
Check In at the Waterfront
Your confirmation names the wharf. The sailing yachts leave from the Viaduct, the Red Boats from Westhaven Marina in St Marys Bay, and the ferries from the Downtown Ferry Terminal. Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early.
Bring a Layer and Sunscreen
It is always cooler on the water than on Queen Street. A warm layer, sunscreen and flat shoes cover most cruises; the sailing yachts also lend wet-weather jackets.

How It Actually Works
What 90 Minutes Under Sail Look Like
Our top pick puts you on a 50-foot sailing yacht with a skipper and crew, and you can help sail it or simply sit back. It leaves from Viaduct Harbour. The ferries use the Downtown Ferry Terminal and the Red Boats sail from Westhaven, so check which waterfront your ticket names. This is the sail, start to finish.
- Check in at the Viaduct — Explore Group's booking kiosk sits on Quay Street in Viaduct Harbour, a short walk west of Britomart and the ferry terminal. Check in about 15 minutes before your time. The regular departure is 3:15pm, with a 10:30am sailing on selected summer days.
- Meet the crew and the safety briefing — The skipper and crew meet you before boarding and run a short safety briefing. Wear flat-soled shoes and bring a warm layer; it is always cooler out on the water.
- Out of the Viaduct and up with the sails — The yacht leaves the Viaduct, the sails go up, and you head out past the Sky Tower and the waterfront towards the Harbour Bridge, sailing beneath it when conditions allow.
- Take the wheel or sit back — Guests can take the helm under the skipper's eye or help hoist the sails, and nobody needs sailing experience. Coffee, tea or hot chocolate and a sweet treat are served on board.
- Back to the Viaduct — The yacht sails back with the skyline in view and returns to the Viaduct after about 90 minutes. The sail needs minimum numbers; if they are not met, you are offered another date or a full refund.

Before You Book
Auckland's Harbour, From the Water
Where the boats leave from, what each kind of cruise shows you, and the choices that change your trip.
Auckland sits on two harbours, and the one the cruises use is the Waitematā on the city’s northern edge. It is a drowned river valley that runs from Riverhead in the west out to the Hauraki Gulf, sheltered by Rangitoto and the Gulf islands, which is why so much of it is calm enough to sail on with no experience at all. An hour on it shows you the city properly: the skyline and the Sky Tower from the water, the Harbour Bridge from underneath, the old villas of Devonport, and Rangitoto’s low, even cone filling the view to the east.
What a harbour cruise covers
The standard loop is the inner harbour, and almost every cruise on this site includes it. You pass the downtown waterfront and the working port, cross towards Devonport and North Head, look out at Rangitoto, and turn back under the Harbour Bridge, which opened in 1959 and had its extra “clip-on” lanes added ten years later. Most of these trips take between one and two and a half hours.
The shortest and cheapest option is the Harbour Highlights Cruise from $18, an hour with live commentary; it is a recent listing with only two reviews so far. The Harbour Sightseeing Cruise is 90 minutes from $22, rated 4.4 by 145 guests, with a skipper’s commentary and a cafe and bar on board (our breakdown).
The main choice: sail, motor cruise or ferry
This is the decision that changes your day most.
A sailing yacht is the reason Auckland calls itself the City of Sails. Our top pick for a first sail is Explore Group’s 90-minute harbour sail on a 50-foot yacht, from $65 and rated 4.7 by 317 guests; you can take the wheel or help with the sails, or just sit back with the hot drink that comes with the ticket. If sailing is the reason you came, the same company’s America’s Cup Sailing Experience puts you on a genuine America’s Cup race yacht, NZL 41 or NZL 68, for two hours. You can grind a winch, take the helm or just sit on the rail. It is rated 4.6 by 341 Viator reviewers and costs from $123 on Viator, or NZ$215 per adult booked direct (our review). Our sailing experience page compares all four sailing trips.
A motor cruise is steadier, has indoor seating and usually a bar, and carries commentary. The Red Boats run most of these, from sightseeing loops to lunch, dinner and wine-and-cheese cruises.
A ferry is the budget way onto the water. The Waiheke return fast ferry is a 40-minute crossing out into the Gulf from $35, and the Rangitoto ferry takes about 25 minutes to an island that rose from the sea about 600 years ago. There is no commentary and you share the boat with commuters and day-trippers, but you see a lot of harbour for the money. Our cruise versus ferry guide sets the two side by side, and the ferries page covers each island run. For fares, piers and the last boat back, see our guide to the Waiheke ferry from Auckland. To choose between a Waiheke ferry, tour or cruise, start with our comparison of the three.
If you are still weighing them up, our guide to which Auckland harbour cruise is right for you matches each cruise to a kind of traveller, and our guide to the best boat tours in Auckland adds the island trips, the jet boat and the full wildlife days. For what each trip costs, from a NZ$39 sightseeing loop to the NZ$215 America’s Cup yacht, see our guide to Auckland harbour cruise prices. Torn between a sightseeing launch and a yacht? Our Auckland harbour cruise vs sailing cruise guide sets the two side by side.
Where you board
The listings name three different waterfronts, and it is easy to go to the wrong one.
- Explore Group’s yachts and the whale and dolphin safari leave from Viaduct Harbour, the old America’s Cup base, a few minutes’ walk west of Britomart.
- The Red Boats and the jet boat leave from Westhaven Marina in St Marys Bay, on the far side of the Harbour Bridge approach. Take a taxi or allow a proper walk.
- The Fullers ferries leave from the Downtown Ferry Terminal on Quay Street. The terminal is part-way through pier works that run into 2027, so read the pier number on your ticket on the day. Our Auckland ferry terminal guide lists which pier each route uses.
Dinner, sunset and the time of day
What you see changes with the hour. Sunset in Auckland falls around 5:10pm in midwinter and as late as about 8:40pm around New Year, once daylight saving is running. So a sunset cruise is an early-evening outing in July and a late one in January.
The Sunset Harbour Cruise is two hours from $27, with food and drink bought at the bar. The sailing cruise with a three-course dinner is two and a half hours from $103 on Viator and is the one to book for an occasion. The dinner cruise page and the sunset cruise page compare the evening options, including the buffet dinner and the night lights cruise, and our guide to Auckland sunset sailing asks whether a yacht at sunset is worth the extra.
Going further: the Gulf, whales and dolphins
Past Rangitoto the water opens into the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, created in 2000. A core group of about 50 Bryde’s whales, a species classed as Nationally Critical, lives in the Gulf all year, and common dolphins are seen in every season. The Whale and Dolphin Safari is a 4.5-hour trip on a 65-foot catamaran from $124, rated 4.5 by 1,275 guests, and gives you a free voucher for another trip if you see no marine mammals. Sightings are never guaranteed, and this is open water, so take seasickness tablets beforehand if you need them. Our whale watching page compares it with Explore’s longer Tīkapa Moana cruise, and there is no short season to wait for: our guide to the best time for whale watching in Auckland explains why the weather on the day matters more than the month.
Weather and what to bring
The harbour is sheltered but not still. Spring, and October in particular, is the windiest part of the year, and the sailing skippers can cancel when the wind is outside their limits, with a new date or a refund. It is always cooler on the water than in the city, so bring a warm layer even in summer, plus sunscreen, a hat and flat shoes; our guide to what to wear on an Auckland harbour cruise has the full packing list. Our guide to the best time for an Auckland harbour cruise goes month by month, and if you are arriving by ship, the Auckland cruise terminal guide shows what is within walking distance of the wharves.
Every cruise on this site can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund, so booking early for a summer weekend costs you nothing if the forecast turns.

Check Availability & BookAuckland Harbour Cruises: Common Questions
What guests ask before they book, answered from the operators' own listings.
Cruises on this site start at $18 per person for a one-hour highlights cruise and $22 for the 90-minute sightseeing cruise with commentary. A sunset cruise is from $27, the 90-minute sail from $65, the America's Cup sail from $123 on Viator and the whale and dolphin safari from $124. Island ferries start at $31 return. See the comparison for what each price buys, and our Auckland harbour cruise prices guide for the operators' own fares in NZ dollars, family tickets and costs for two.
For most visitors, the 90-minute harbour sail: a 50-foot yacht under sail past the skyline, rated 4.7 by 317 guests, from $65. If sailing is the reason you came, the America's Cup Sailing Experience puts you to work on a real race yacht for two hours, from $123 on Viator (our review). On a tighter budget the 90-minute sightseeing cruise covers the same inner harbour with commentary from $22. Our full guide matches each cruise to a kind of traveller.
It depends on the operator. Explore Group's sailing yachts and the whale and dolphin safari leave from Viaduct Harbour. The Red Boats and the jet boat leave from Westhaven Marina in St Marys Bay, on the far side of the Harbour Bridge approach. The Fullers ferries to Waiheke and Rangitoto use the Downtown Ferry Terminal on Quay Street, where pier works run into 2027, so check the pier on your ticket.
No. The professional crew runs the yacht and shows you what to do. You can take a turn on the winches or at the helm, or just sit and enjoy it. The listing sets the minimum age at 10, and the skipper can cancel if the wind is outside the yacht's limits, in which case you are offered another date or a refund. Our sailing guide covers what the day is like.
Yes, two. The sailing cruise with a three-course dinner lasts two and a half hours from $103 on Viator, and the Red Boats run a buffet dinner cruise from $67. The dinner cruise page compares them with the lunch and night lights cruises.
Not on an inner-harbour loop, as a rule. Whales and dolphins live out in the Hauraki Gulf, and the trips that go looking for them are longer: the Whale and Dolphin Safari spends 4.5 hours on the water and gives you a free voucher for another trip if you see no marine mammals. Bryde's whales and common dolphins live in the Gulf all year, but no sighting is guaranteed. See the whale watching page.
Yes. The Waiheke fast ferry crosses the harbour and part of the Gulf in about 40 minutes and costs from $35 return, and the Rangitoto ferry takes about 25 minutes from $35 return. You get no commentary and you share the boat with commuters, but you see a great deal of water. Our cruise versus ferry guide compares the two, and our guide to the best boat tours in Auckland covers the island day trips.
It follows the sun. Sunset in Auckland falls around 5:10pm in midwinter and as late as about 8:40pm around New Year, when daylight saving is running, so the departure time moves through the year. The Sunset Harbour Cruise lasts two hours from $27. The sunset cruise page covers the evening options, and the sunset sailing guide has a month-by-month sunset table.
A warm layer, even in summer, because it is always cooler on the water. Add sunscreen, a hat, flat shoes and a camera. On the sailing yachts, weatherproof jackets are provided when needed. For a trip out into the Gulf, take seasickness tablets beforehand if you are prone to it. Our guide to what to wear on an Auckland harbour cruise has a packing list for each season and kind of trip.
Every cruise on this site can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund. If the operator cancels for weather, the listings offer a new date or a refund. Spring, October especially, is the windiest time of year, so a flexible booking is useful then. Our best time guide goes month by month.
